Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Not Buy an iPhone 5s/5c

No comments :

Many Apple lovers have been lined up to seek the pleasure of the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c as per the Apple tradition. But there are many other people who will still wait and watch if the two models are worth their amount of money. The fuss of the iOS may lead some to go buy the so called ‘cheaper’ 5c so that they can also get to know how it feels to have an apple product but they might not end being those very happy customers! For all those who are still not sure if they should buy the new 5s or 5c the top tens have listed up the top ten reasons why they should not let their money go into something worthless.

gold_iphone_5s_mockup_imore_fixed

Since its very beginning Apple has always taken a closed method to its software and hardware. To be fair, this does have some advantages. For example, the closed nature of Apple’s iOS ecosystem – which inspects any app before letting it onto its App Store and blocks developers setting up third-party marketplaces – is a key reason the iOS has remained wonderful for so long. But a drawback of this closed method is that it enormously slows down the innovation system. While the Apple development is safe on one hand, on the other hand it will never be able to enjoy different and unexpected changes that will be brought in other open systems.

Unlike many other amazing smartphones, iPhone 5s or 5c still do not offer any SD card slot through which the customers can easily save and retrieve their data. All they ever did and will probably keep on doing is attach their cable wire to the internal system and sync things and do stuff. Keeping usefulness aside the Apple company has been always been more focused to design.

With HTC, Nokia Lumia 1020, Samsung S4 and other recently launched smartphones in market having some amazing pixel quality and camera updates Apple iPhone 5c have nothing too exciting to offer. Although the 5s model have updated the camera quality a little but that also did not bring it to the mark of its competitors quality.

Apple lists iOS 7 as having over 200 new features, which on paper makes the software, look fairly advanced. But people who have been using Android will not be impressed by the work as they have seen much in their very own world. Example of this is the new quick settings bar. The quick settings menu is an attractive addition that offers a quick and easy way to access certain options. However it’s a feature that has been on Android for years now and the only real difference is that you access it by swiping up from the bottom of the screen whereas it’s the other way around in Android.

This year the Apple iPhone 5s and 5c have nothing new to offer the customers, through which they will be fascinated, so it’s better for the Apple Company to come up with something worth the wait next year. That might be a wider screen, much improved and redesigned set that will make the people see the worth for which they are going to spend a heavy amount.

For those who have O2 and are anxious to get on 4G with an iPhone, the wait is still going on and will go on longer.  Apple will have to release a software upgrade to run on the network owned by O2, and for users this is nevertheless more annoying.

One of the main reasons of not buying the iPhone 5s or 5c is that both the models come up with iOS 7 already installed in them and there is no such option that will allow the customer to go back to iOS 6. This can make the customer confused as the previous iOS used by the customer had been easier to use for them and the new features can complicate the customers.

Apple has always rejected to detail the full technical specifications of chips used in its iOS tablets and smartphones. This is because, according to Apple, the information is an incorrect representation of how fast the device actually is. In the past there has been some truth to this claim, with Apple’s previous dual-core iPhone 4S easily excelling all similar Android phones. However, with each Android software release this claim has rang less correct and today most current quad-core Android smartphones are able to match if not beat iPhones performance-wise.

The design of the phone has not been updated since years now, but the 5s and 5c resemble the iPhone 5 a lot, other than 5c’s plastic back and 5’s body comes in gold, silver and space grey. The company needs to do a lot with its design, leaving behind its very typical single button at the bottom of the screen and leaving big spaces on the top and bottom of the screen.

With all these negative points in iPhone 5s and 5c the price of the phone is touching skies as usual. The backdrop of the company is that there are many other smartphone companies in the market which are offering much more than iPhone and has its price reasonable too.

UPDATE 1-Asian supplier shares fall as Apple's 5C iPhone stirs doubts

No comments :

* Apple to sell lower-cost iPhone at $730 in China

* Concerns iPhone 5C demand will be weak in emerging markets

* Shares in Chinese, Japanese suppliers fall (Updates with iPhone offer price in China, analyst's comments, Chinese and HK-listed suppliers)

By Dominic Lau and Clement Tan

TOKYO/HONG KONG, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Shares of Apple Inc's component suppliers in Asia came under pressure on Wednesday as investors lock in recent gains on concerns that its lower-cost iPhone is still too expensive for its target audience in China and other emerging markets.

On Tuesday, Apple unveiled its flagship iPhone 5S with a fingerprint scanner to help it stand out among the smartest of phones. It also introduced the colourful 5C plastic model for emerging markets.

The cheaper, plastic-backed iPhone 5C will sell for 4,488 yuan ($730) in China, almost $200 more than the United States retail price of $549 and only 800 yuan less than its top-of-the-line sibling, the 5S.

"People were all expecting the 5C would be a low-cost model, but it doesn't look like it will be too competitive now," said Jackson Wong, Tanrich Securities vice president for equity sales in Hong Kong. "Everybody is now looking to the China Mobile announcement, which can happen anytime now."

Markets have been speculating that the California-based tech giant is on the verge of signing a distribution pact with China Mobile Ltd, the country's biggest wireless carrier with more than 740 million subscribers. China Mobile shares were down 1.4 percent.

Among the Japanese component makers, Taiyo Yuden Co Ltd , Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd and Ibiden Co Ltd were down between 1.4 and 2.9 percent.

Hong Kong-listed AAC Technologies Holdings Inc sagged 5.2 percent and Goertek Inc, which supplies speakers to Apple, plunged the maximum 10 percent limit in Shenzhen, while Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd eased a more modest 1.3 percent.

Traders also said the cheaper model, which will go on sale on Friday and come in five colours - blue, green, pink, yellow and white - could crimp margins at suppliers.

"In terms of components, it's all a volume game with low margins. It's not a huge positive for component makers," a senior dealer at a foreign bank in Tokyo said.

Apple has been losing ground to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd in emerging markets like China and India.

Other Japanese part suppliers that were hit on Tuesday included Mitsumi Electric Co Ltd, Japan Aviation Electronics Industry Ltd, Minebea Co Ltd, Alps Electric Co Ltd and Nidec Corp, off between 1 and 4.3 percent.

BUYING OPPORTUNITY

Another Tokyo-based trader disagreed that margins were under threat, saying Apple has long been squeezing its part suppliers so if the tech giant can increase sales, it would benefit component makers as well.

"It's not negative for the component makers because it's about volume. If anything, it is positive for component makers because you are now arguably going to be selling even more iPhones," he said, adding that the selloff in the Japanese component makers offered buying opportunities.

"The potential you've got here is not that you are going to be selling fewer iPhone 5S...What you are doing here is attacking a brand new market," the trader said. "Now they have come up with a mid-range phone because there is a huge market for entry level smartphones."

According to Thomson Reuters StarMine, suppliers Taiyo Yuden, Murata and Ibiden were 14 to 37 percent below their intrinsic value, which evaluates a stock based on projected growth over the next decade, using a combination of analyst forecasts and industry growth expectations.

DoCoMo's iPhone offer turns up the heat on Japanese handset makers

No comments :
By Sophie Knight

TOKYO, Sept 11 | Wed Sep 11, 2013 3:11am EDT

TOKYO, Sept 11 (Reuters) - The decision by Japanese mobile carriers to offer the newly unveiled 5C, a lower-end handset that was expected to be released only in emerging markets, will likely seal the fate of troubled Japanese handset makers as it erases their price advantage.

The likes of Sharp Corp and Fujitsu Ltd are also threatened by NTT DoCoMo Inc's decision to offer the iPhone for the first time to its roughly 60 million subscribers after haemorrhaging customers to iPhone-touting rivals SoftBank Corp and KDDI Corp .

Although it had been speculated that Apple would release a low-end iPhone for emerging markets, some were surprised that the less expensive plastic 5C, unveiled on Tuesday, will be offered by DoCoMo and the other two major Japanese carriers.

"Japanese handset makers are already bound for extinction and this will just accelerate that process," said Mitsushige Akino, chief fund manager at Ichiyoshi Investment Management.

Now Sharp, Fujitsu and Kyocera Corp, which have seen their market share shrink as the iPhone grew to claim more than a quarter of the Japanese smartphone market, could go the same way as NEC Corp, which is pulling out of handsets, or Panasonic Corp, which is cutting back.

Until now, Japanese handset makers had been somewhat shielded from the threat of the iPhone under the auspices of DoCoMo, which promoted their devices to its massive user base in the absence of an Apple product.

For example, Sony Corp 's Xperia A sold 1.3 million units this summer in Japan, briefly overtaking the iPhone as the most popular handset as DoCoMo discounted it as one of its top two picks.

With more than half of DoCoMo subscribers considering buying an iPhone even before the carrier announced it would offer the handset, according to a survey conducted by Tokyo-based IT consultancy MMD, domestic handset makers could see their sales plummet.

That could be exacerbated if the 5C is sold for a price that competes with low to middle-end smartphones. Although Japanese carriers have yet to detail their pricing plans, the handset will retail at $99 on a contract with U.S. carriers, compared to $199 for the 5S.

DoCoMo will still promote handsets from Sharp, Fujitsu and Sony as its top picks for winter, but any boost to sales is seen as limited.

"You're going to see a lot of Android users switch to the iPhone," said Atsuro Sato, an analyst at research firm Gartner in Tokyo. "I think the winter campaign's effect will be limited. It looks like Kyocera, which is betting on its overseas prospects, is the safest among Japanese makers."

Japanese suppliers for iPhone parts, however, could benefit if the cheaper model is a hit in emerging markets, analysts say. On the other hand, if its price tag of $733 for an unlocked phone in China proves prohibitive, parts makers' margins may be crimped.

On Wednesday afternoon, share prices of Apple suppliers Taiyo Yuden Co Ltd, Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd and Ibiden Co Ltd were down between 1.4 and 2.5 percent, underperforming a 0.8 percent rise in the Nikkei index.

CORRECTED-In world's biggest market, "cheap" iPhone looks too pricey

No comments :

(Corrects paragraph 4 to say estimate is for 5C, not 5S)

By Paul Carsten and Lee Chyen Yee

BEIJING/SINGAPORE, Sept 11 (Reuters) - The world's biggest public company and the world's biggest country are at loggerheads over the price of a phone.

Apple Inc's new plastic-backed iPhone 5C will sell for 4,488 yuan ($730) China, almost $200 more than the United States retail price of $549 and only 800 yuan ($130) less than its top-of-the-line sibling, the 5S.

The pricing of what was expected to be a cheap model aimed at growth markets such as China and India has not only stumped investors, but also Apple aficionados in China, a country of 1.4 billion people and the world's largest smartphone market.

"My original estimate of the 5C price was around 3,000 yuan, but more than 4,000 - I think for a budget version the price may be a little expensive. I don't think I can buy one," said Liu Donghai, a 25-year-old chemical engineer.

"If the 5S is around 5,000, then it's similar to the already-released 5 and 4S. I would accept this," he added.

Apple, whose market capitalisation of $449 billion makes it the world's most valuable publicly traded company, unveiled the two new handsets at an event at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California, on Tuesday.

For the first time, it held a launch event in Beijing hours later on Wednesday, a move seen as underscoring the importance of the Chinese market.

LACK OF BUZZ

New Apple product releases tend to generate a great deal of buzz, but the 5C's reception in China, where fans have been known to queue for days for new products, was lukewarm at best.

"The iPhone 5C is so expensive. Originally I absolutely planned to buy it, now the price makes me uncomfortable. Isn't it just an iPhone 5 with a plastic back?" said Sina Weibo user Shangzhiruixin.

The phrase "iPhone 5S" was the most popular search term on Sina Weibo, China's most widely used microblogging service, on Wednesday, while "iPhone 5C" did not appear on the top searches list.

Other users questioned why anyone willing to fork out well over 4,000 yuan for a smartphone would not just pay a bit more for the premium 5S model.

But others believe that the 5C makes sense in an increasingly competitive smartphone market, where the cheaper the handsets the more bitter the fight for dominance.

Apple's share of the China smartphone market slipped to 5 percent in the second quarter, according to research firm Canalys, trailing not just Samsung but also the likes of Lenovo Group Ltd, ZTE Corp , Huawei Technologies and Xiaomi Technology.

"Even though Apple has a lower end iPhone now, its price is still considered mid-end in China and not low-end," said Sandy Shen, a Shanghai-based analyst for Gartner.

Around half of China's smartphone shipments are in the 700-1,500 yuan range, said Shen, but competing on those prices isn't an attractive prospect for Apple.

"Considering Apple's old rival Samsung and domestic players such as Huawei, Lenovo and Coolpad all have phones in that category, Apple will still lose out in market share in these key segments," she said. RPT-DoCoMo's iPhone offer turns up the heat on Japanese handset makers

TOKYO, Sept 11 (Reuters) - The decision by Japanese mobile carriers to offer the newly unveiled 5C, a lower-end handset that was expected to be released only in emerging markets, will likely seal the fate of troubled Japanese handset makers as it erases their price advantage.
